Crazy idea for regulating the pit that would solve every issue you brought up kander:
Limit it to certain skill/account time caps
Or a limited number of uses, say, 20
Or limit it to young players only
No vys/habibi vs newbie
No 0 risk duelling for everyone always
No everyone hanging out there

If the pit can be regulated that strict then im all game. I just dont want to see hang out for vet players / to skilled to be there.

After starting to read this, I've realized that it would just encourage PVP heads to camp out there to get easy wins or duel for free. I think a better solution may be to set up a GM hosted PVP school or something like that since there's no realistic way to decide how good someone is at PVP via scripts to allow/disallow them entry into the area.
Maybe a ladder system where once you're above a certain ranking, you can't go in. *shrug*

I think trying to work out someone's skill is too hard. Rather, assume that after x goes in the pvp pit they have learnt enough that they can move on. Maybe if they have a win streak of y they can be kicked off the stone early for the quick learners, and they have to have won at least z for the slow learners.
Trick is working out x, y and z.

Though I think some kind of PvP school would be sick, haha
EDIT: Be it staff, or player-run

I have seen a ranking system for auto tourny matches. 1v1 / 2v2 / 3v3 / 4v4 where you bring your own items. Eru if you would like to see the bracket just pm me here on the forums and show you the ranking system. The matches where from crafted only to magic wep and armor only. Doing this made real braging rights and the winner/s got 50k for 1st and 0 for other. Im from a BIG pvp server that has a ton more active players then this and has the secondage era pvp mechanics ( but that server and its mechanics dont mean squat.) but the ideas for pvp tourny events they had there would make this server explode with pvp goodness. Like twinkies!!!!

Whats wrong with people hanging out dueling? To earn money or loot, you need to PvP in a different arena or outside in the world.
I really don't think many people will spend all their time dueling over and over for no gain.

The thing is, the people that would go to that area, are pvp heads... which is somewhat the point. Nobody would want to hang out and fight for 10 gold as their sole uo experience. I dont think it would need to be regulated quite the way everyone is expressing.. And so what if a Vys, or Habibi comes there to fight, the only way to be the best is to play the best.
I think at this point Kander and Eru, you guys are throwing the baby out with the bath water.. Instead of seeing how it would be detrimental (which Im not quite understanding) I see it as being entirely beneficial.... no real gain for experienced pvpers to spend time there (aside from donating time to coaching the new generation) and a great place for anyone inexperienced with this type of play (which are quite a few of us) to learn as we find our feet in this new world.
Edit : While you may be a UO purist, Kander, not everyone has the time to donate countless hours of monster hunting in order to have 1 hour of pvp fun. At this point all resources are priced in such a way that pvp appears to be a rich man's pass-time.
When people came here, talking about "fizzle" pvp, everyone was down on the idea, begging for everyone to try this style prior to casting judgement. Many of us are more than willing to give this style a try.. and what you are seeing now are individuals that are more than willing to comply ... but UO is an older generation now and many of us have a full time job, a house to keep, and mouths to feed, without the extra time to allocate to monster hunting... so we are simply looking for the proper setting to facilitate our assimilation into your culture.... thats all.. not looking for handouts.. or trammel..free items to keep.. or whatever boogieman will crop up next.

I do not think this should be added... I have the same opinions on this as Eru and Kander. I shouldn't really need to explain why I have that opinion, and I'm pretty surprised anyone worth their salt would agree with this idea. I hardly doubt something like this will ever be added, especially for 10 gold... Really?
edit: Read a lot of responses along the lines of "who would want to PvP for no gain" well to be honest, for me it isn't really the loot I care about. It's the fun of the fight that keeps me fighting. I have dueled/fought here soooooooooooooo many times... I have had some amazing fights with many players on this server, the kind where it doesn't even matter who wins. You know what would have made all that fighting much more localized/cheap? Your suggestion! That being said, I do not agree with it in the slightest. It would be a new spot for everyone to just sit and duel non-stop until they don't want to anymore. I don't mean to sound rude but this is not a good suggestion.

Perhaps we can work something out, maybe set up an arena that can only be used a limited number of times per account, or which has a price that increases steadily with use such that after a certain point it is not worth it. As for PvP school, I would be willing to run events of this nature once in a while when I have time. I know how some of the players here feel as I myself am a fairly poor PvPer and would like to practice more and it is indeed expensive to do so, but I also think it is important that we don't create a beast that is going to suck players away from doing real PvP (I kinda feel the Casino is already starting to do this sometimes).

Eru and Habibi it seems to me that your grievances would be addressed by regulating accessibility to this area. Habibi I am surprised you are against something that would clearly help to increase the amount of players who pvp..

There are a lot of things you could do to make it so people can't just duel there all day. Make a 5 duel a day limit per account is probably the simplest.
The whole idea is to give new people who might not have any idea how the PvP works a chance to get some practice in without spending every gold coin they have on pots & scrolls.
Plus it's just plain fun and gives people somethin to do.
