If the amount you pay determines how long your house stays for, then what, a 1 room house (30k) decays in 10 days, a tower (100k) decays in 30 days, the large tower (300k) decays in 90 days, a custom house worth 1 million decays in 300 days and a static worth 10 million decays in 3000 days? That's just stupid...
If you had a castle and loss it when you come back you just need a house placement tool , money and a spot to put it.
If you lose a static you have the risk of when you come back it have already been buyed by someone else and cant have it again.
Btw you dont need to pass by an auction to buy a normal house or redo you custom.
An idea that come to my head if that idea get implemented someday is refound the owner with the house value on gold.
Anyway if you set the decay time to a year to all kind of houses (and refound the money ) so I dont care if the time gonna be the same to statics.

House decay... something I personally wanted from day 1.
Lets look at this from the pros and cons...
Pros
It makes players log in more often
If players dont log in it eventually, reduces item count
It supports the fact that we aren't carebear
It would show we care more about existing players then ones that bailed
It keeps the environment changing, people will venture out more
House decay was a sphere feature
Cons
People who bailed on us for over 3 months would be upset if they came back.
Okay not to be a jerk but thats the only con I can think of. Honestly, we can even extend decay time for people are going away or request so, an additional 3 months would be fine. If they don't log in once in a half of year well... chances are they just won't ever log in.
Truth be told, as players come and go this will be needed anyway, the house count only goes up every single day. Players come, buy a house either decide to stay or split and that eats up more space.
We definitely need this, though it might be better saved for when we leave beta.

Im starting to believe on Smoke when he says you dont read the entire post.
So if they do this you gonna have the money to get a new castle right away when you log in and open the bank.

I'd prefer them to drop. Wouldn't make much sense for them to magically fly into someone's bank. We don't have a bank limit so if a player is going to leave and aren't sure about coming back they can bank their things. Like I said though, if people don't want to lose their things they will log in more often. Once every 3 months is more then enough time.

If possible, could you tie houses to an account so that when you log into your account they're refreshed? It'd be simpler than having to run around to different houses refreshing them, though I'd do that if it's what had to be done. I'm not a fan of adding more hassle to the game though.

I kinda just glanced threw a couple post here and someone said that it should be the same for statics. The thing is most statics are guild house's even though the owner of the static doesn't log in doesn't mean the static isn't being used.

Same can be said for normal houses though.
I agree with all Shade's points. At the end of the day its just 'litter' throughout the world and if something isn't done from the outset it will probably never be cleaned up.
The fact that players come and go isn't new and things cant stand still and wait for them to *maybe* log in 10 months down the line. I think the world needs to be as dynamic as possible and this will certainly add to that.
Edit:
How about Guilds are able to register X number of houses as non-decayable so that if the owner, who isn't necessarily the 'user', doesnt need to login to avoid it decaying? Obviously this would have to be monitored to avoid people taking the piss and registering their own houses to avoid the decaying system...
Just my thoughts.
