AFK Resource Gathering Punishments
#13

It's topics like this that kill the player base. If you all haven't noticed, voting has went down hill, and the player base is getting lower, and lower.

So focused on "trying to keep the economy level" but yet they gave house and static transfers, and even guildstones. Look at the economy already and the shard has been up a month. Delaying the inevitable in my opinion.

It's not like you can't be PKed resource gathering. Unguard Minoc mine and call it a day. Funny how other shards don't ban resource gathering and they are all surviving. Look at Hybrid over 900+ on at low.

I macro lumberjacking.. And my script shows very clearly that its a script, since i might take the same route 3-4 times hehe. It looks suspicious and AFK'ish but its just that i do other things aswell at the same time and dont mind that i dont get so much lumber.
(i have a widescreen and im often programming while im macroing, so i watch the UO side of my screen from time to time. So im not AFK.. I just dont stare at my char all the time.)

Odium has often watched me, but ive always seen him and replyed to him.

Again ive always been able to talk to the GM's who have showed up. And ive never been killed by the anti macro gump.

But what if i dont see the GM talking to me first time because im in the middle of a writing a code or searching google or whatever.. ?

Is my script then a problem ? because i know that 90% of the miners uses scripts so i dont see anything wrong with useing a lumberjacking script.

I guess it's because some people found the way to counter it.

I doubt it... But if thats the case then staff should watch you for awhile.. And then force the gump up.. im sure they have a command for that. Then they can see if it get clicked while someone is AFK, Or force 2-3 anti macro gumps up at the same time since that would confuse such a script.

This is a very controversial matter to talk about. On one hand you have the situation being compared with afk macroing while there, and afk macroing while not there, but having a notification pop up when the gump arrives. I honestly do not see the difference in someone being at the computer while they are afk gathering to afk gathering and waiting for their script to notify them. Most afk gatherers have stated they do other things while this goes on, diminishing the ability to conversate with a GM. Well, the old days of IN1 shard, you were killed for the first offense for ANY afk macroing. Jailed, then banned if I am correct. If you want to get this situation calmed, all you have to do is end AFK macroing completely. By doing this, this still gives players the opportunity to afk gather, but has the same risk involved, only a GM is involved directly instead of a gump. This was a fantastic approach, as it stopped the hell out of afk macroers in their tracks. Of course though, back then, there was a lot less players then there are today. So I would say staff would need an increase in positions. (Count me out!) But There are also several scripting capabilities on the part of the developers to further restrict afk macroing. Well, you could do things such as:

Have the anti macro gump move them over one square, so then it messes up their route a little bit. Or use the feature that gargoyle axe's had, the ore monster spawning. This is also another great feature. It also brings in a spot of role play element as well as diversity. Perhaps having pickaxe's breaking after so many uses. THis is also another element that brings more diversity. Some of these ideas may not be Sphere 51A, but Sphere51A was extremely limited on its diversity capabilities. I would suggest using sphere atmosphere, and runuo features.

The possibilities are endless. I still agree with the punishment involved, but, it is a bit to harsh. a .kill sends the message the first time, a jail sends a stronger mesage, and theft of resources sends an even stronger message, and a ban is a final message. There should not be such severe measures to be taken as a first offense. There is a chance of a mistake on the GM's part. And you have to realize aswell, if you take their resources because you are a impatient ******* who cannot wait 5 minutes for a reply incase they are pooping, you seriously need to rethink this. I know at least one GM that does NOT wait more than 1 minute for a response, and this is QUITE unfair. And when a GM makes a mistake, when they do, there is no if, they do mess up, there will be no return of resources taken. If a GM says one thing, their word is final, sure this is an excellent law system, but if a GM makes a mistake, their rule is to NEVER replace items lost/taken/stolen/bugged, etc.

You all need to SERIOUSLY think about all these perspectives, come up with more, and discuss a medium.

THis system, I like it, but it is way to damn harsh, and there are to many what if scenarios, and then you have personalities and misunderstandings from language barriers and cultural barriers( misunderstanding of personality or speech)

Think before you all act.

Speaks for it's self. I said this before, players get bored, and when you don't have anything that separates you from such shards like Hybrid, you're going to get boring and people are going to leave. Making harsher rules isn't the way to keep players, no sir.

There is a way to counter the anti macro gump for the most part... the fact is that afk resource gathering has clearly been stated as illegal from the start. Even if you die, lets say mining in minoc or chopping in yew, you are in a guarded spot and have plenty of time and hardly any worries to get your body. That means there is 0 punishment for it right now.
I support this rule 150% myself.

The punishments have been updated, please check them out.

I'll run through some afk harvesting situations to clear things up for everyone:

1) "legal" afk harvesting

You are running your harvesting script while talking with people on msn, watching tv, a movie, sporting event, etc.

This is allowed 100% because you can easily check on UO and see what is happening. You don't have to constantly stare at UO, but just check every few minutes.

2) "illegal" afk harvesting

You start your harvesting script and head out for a night on the town with your friends.

You are profitting by putting in 0 work in comparison to someone who is sitting there watching their script. The person watching their script puts in more work but gets the same reward. This is not fair.

3) "but i was there!"

Before jailing you, a staff member will watch you for a few minutes to see if you're doing the "legal" or "illegal" afk harvesting. At some point if you go to get a drink or go to the bathroom this is not considered afk harvesting because we're all human and need to do this at some point. You do run the risk of getting caught by the auto gump, but we won't jail you if you don't answer us right away.

The person I caught was clearly doing the "illegal" afk harvesting because when I took away his pickaxe his macro kept going. Someone watching/listening would of realized they weren't mining any more or that something looked fishy with their character. I let this go for a minute or two thinking maybe he is getting a drink. But when this went on I was pretty convinced. Next I jailed him and he kept walking around trying to get somewhere. Clearly he was "illegal" afk harvesting because he didn't notice he was magically in a 9x9 room with no dungeon floor.

Yes GMs are capable of making mistakes and that is why before we jail someone for afk harvesting we will run a few tests. Issuing the autogump wont help if the person's script takes care of it.

Thanks,
GM Pande
