Server - Question
#1

Hi All,

I know I have posed this question in the past however I was just curious whether the owner(s) of the server have any intentions of switching the server location? As you are probably aware from previous posts, I have 350 ping at it's best from Australia. The Forsaken guild would love to rejoin playing actively however considering we are a pure pvp guild, It doesn't seem feasable joining on such a large ping for all of us.

I'm sorry to bring up this question again however nothing is more depressing then having a fully trained character (hours of devotion) on a shard that started in America then switches to Europe. I understand the circumstances around this change were unpredictable however I'm sure everyone understands the frustration.

Anyways, whatever the answer is, I completely understand. As I imagine you must now have a strong european client base however thought It would be worthwhile asking the question as you have 5 - 7 players keen to rejoin if our ping was anywhere close to 200 (which is playable). I have honestly pinged the server from every broadband/ADSL2 connection available in Australia and the ping still hovers above 300. I have really exhausted every avenue possible on my side to resolve my issue without bothering the forums.

Thanks guys and hope all the oldies are well.

Regards,

Where are you pinging from in Australia? I'm in Austin, TX and here's my stats:

Quote:--- game.in-uo.net ping statistics ---
48 packets transmitted, 48 received, 0% packet loss, time 47005ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 177.758/177.951/178.099/0.298 ms

Not ideal, but 177 is a workable ping. I'd like to blame kangaroos for the Australia connection issues as I usually do. I'm thinking that the problem lies in the infrastructure and routing table between you and the server. Since it's going a long way, other people between you and the server may have already established some strange routing and you're piggybacking off of that, if that makes sense. So the connection isn't taking the shortest route.

There's no quick fix for that though. Maybe connecting through a proxy might help if you can find one that's near Sweden. Hopefully a route won't already be established that will affect the path your connection takes, though it's no guarantee. Plus there's no guarantee that the proxy won't be overloaded by other users.

As for moving the server, we don't have any plans to do so at the moment because the setup we have now is ridiculously cheap. We just pay for power and internet and we have a more powerful computer and connection than we'd get if we paid 10x as much.

I'm pinging from Sydney, Australia.

It's quite strange though because I've played on servers that were in Europe (e.g. The Abyss) which I think was out of Russia, and I could connect with under 200 ping. I'll try connect through a proxy for a 'last' attempt to continue playing however I imagine it won't work as I think a guildmate tried something similar in the past.

Thanks for your reply though Eru. Great to see IN is growing. Hopefully I can find some 'BEEPING' way to connect on a 200 ping connection and continue the Forsaken guilds legacy Wink

Any additional suggestions from other players would be greatly appreciated. I'll try any option available. Here is an incentive - 5 - 7 new active players who will be available for pvp.. I know I'm not the most friendly pvper but I do provide good action across the shard. hehe

Sucks that a lot of Aus players and others are having trouble Sad. If there were something out there that had a just as powerful computer as Taran's but not ridiculously over priced to be hosted in America that be good. I've only looked a little and find the server that are being used are very old dual cores and over priced as hell to be hosted. Its really stupid how these companies charge so much

There was an oppurtunity not long ago. I had purchased a server which was more than powerfull enough, that Aussies (myself being one) would ping 180-200ms~ too but at the time Shade wasn't interested because they wanted to be 100% in control of it. It was an ESXi server with a VM configured and secure just for IN, I used the rest of the resources on other VM's for my web hosting.

I thought it was a rather generous contribution but it wasnt used. I now havent bothered playing because other than sitting at the bank macroing i cant do much else. I try and fighting anything and it just lags.

IN1 was more than playable for me on a crappy Australian DSL connection, now I cant even play and i have 100Mb Cable!

If people were willing to donate or atlease had a reason to donate IN might be able to pay for a server.
Smaller\cheaper items people can donate for could be an idea. $5 - $10 instead of $25-$50-$75

On the other hand a server in AUS would no doubt be laggy for some players on other continents. You have to think about the whole player base. It doesn't make much sense to host a server on a different continent than most of the players, and I definitely understand the owner/admin wanting to have full control of the server.

Cujo used to tear it up back in the day and he was on AOL dialup from France.

Rob, I agree. I know that the owners must consider the majority of the playerbase before considering a hand full in Australia. However I just feel that if the server was back in America that everyone would benefit. It may be slightly slower for Europe based players however still playable which I believe would equal more players on the server.

Personally, I pay $120AUD ($110 USD) each game I purchase from the shop. I'm happy to support/contribute to donations with IN - upto $70-$80AUD per month - so my guild could play on the shard with such a strong playerbase available at the moment.

Taran or whoever is running IN at the moment - Would this option even be considered if you were able to recieve enough donations to support a server in the US? If so, could someone give a rough estimation on the costs involved in getting a server set up for IN in America? I'm extremely serious about this and would be willing to put in any leg work I could to assist in it happening. Or maybe even a strong/faster server somewhere closer to Australia but not to far from America and Europe. (Open to suggestions on this).

I have a feeling I'm wasting my time with all this and I completely understand any decisions made (positive or negative for the Australian players) but I had to ask.. You can appreciate that right? Smile

No one mentioned hosting the server in Australia. The suggestion was to move it to the US, this would drop Aus\NZ players down to about ~200ms and European players might jump to ~100ms both of which make the game playable.
Speed isnt an issue with UO, it doesnt really require large amounts of bandwidth, on IN1 i was able to tear it up on DialUp from Western Australia.
Latency is our issue atm.

A decent server in the US is probably going to be around US$100-US$150 a month.

The below is a screenshot of my ping to a US based UO shard which currently supports 150-200 users concurently. (I removed its name and a few digits from its IP as not to advertise)
Then under it you'll see my ping to IN. I can run around on the first one with 0 lag and it has users from all over the globe.

Id certainly entertain the idea of donation if I could actually play.

Oh look, it looks like someone else had the same idea that I did to avoid janky-routing: http://www.battleping.com/ultima-online-ping.php
That has a free service for 7 days if you want to try it out, then if it works and you see a decrease in lag, you can maybe find a free proxy service.

-edit-
Found some Swedish Proxies:

I have tried battleping over the last two days with no improvement. Is anyone else using it with any success? Im not sure how to use those proxys you have listed though, one of the sites has the proxys response times between 4000ms and higher.
I'm playing from Sydney Australia with 360ms ping, choppiness and rubberbanding like you wouldn't believe.

I'm with tpg adsl 5000kb/512kb.

Sad to say I won't be able to stick around long like this. It
Is unplayable. Not anyones fault though, the shard looks
Great and the setup for newbies is ultra welcoming (in my experience).
