Greatest idea ever! -> Instruments
#13

i don't see how everyone likes this idea so much. yes there are games out there where you imitate playing an instrument, but you are holding an imitation instrument atleast. here you will be clicking buttons...i'm sorry, but this is not guitar hero or an attempt to be... this is ULTIMA ONLINE a medieval game where you fight monsters and other players. not play instruments.

This is my personal opinion when it comes to that:

Ultima Online is an massive multiplayer online roleplaying game in which you can do anything you like, that includes playing instruments. :]

I don't think it is about "acting as if you are playing the instrument IRL", but more about giving your character whom you are roleplaying a chance to "decide" even more what he wants to play, instead of Ultima Online deciding it for him.

The people whom do not roleplay or like to play music can just stay away from the instrument, and hunt monsters and fight other players if that's what they want to do, but I don't see any harm in adding it for the people who may enjoy it, as long as it can't be bug abused or abused in ways to annoy people too much.

Now that's just one of those typical XUO-statements. Ultima Online is NOT only about fighting! I don't even bother explane further, since it has been explaned so many times, and still, you just won't get it. *Sigh*

Seriously... how pathetic that after all this time and arguements that took place that you still are so narrow minded. No cuddling for you. I seriously can't believe you said that... why even bother merging with an rp/pvp shard?

There is so much more to this game then what most people see. I don't know if some of you people never look past combat skills and magery but there are other skills in the game and they were put there for a reason. One of the biggest let downs to me when picking a shard is seeing 'This skill is disabled' or something along those lines. There are a thousand games out there that are solely fighting games, this however is much more then that.
I even wish that the typical useless skills had some purpose somehow: cooking, herding, remove traps, music skills, veterinary, camping, spirit speak, and all the lores. These skills all need to be working and they have much room for improvement.

EDIT(added cause I was slow with the post):

I agree.

One of my passions as a developer is to think of "usefull" things to do with skills that people normally do not use. I belive that with time, every skill will be worth GMing on INX, we just have to get through the opening.

Up until now it has been about recreating something, which in our case is Sphere, and that is A LOT of work. As soon as we have added the tweaks and come out beta, I believe that you will see rapid development of new ideas that will improve everyones game play.

Don't put everyone from XUO in one box, everyone plays the game differently and enjoys different things. Even if most players from XUO enjoyed PvP and fighting, most of them enjoyed it through different means. The shard wasn't restricted in such a way so that people had to PvP, there were enough people that enjoyed different things.

Pande, for example, enjoyed collecting items. Hate likes to talk and befriend people. I enjoy walling and paralyzing. Tiesto likes to host tours. Johab liked to hunt for treasures. "Fighting" comes in many forms.

UO, like many said, is different for different people. I would like to think that UO is about doing what ever you want to do, and having the wide viraity of options, is what makes people play a 10(or so) year old game.

Personally I would never use this features, but I do think that it is cool, and I think that we should implement this if it doesn't require any client modification.

Yes, people enjoy different things, that is basically what I meant to point out in my previously post. Pande did clearly state, that UO is a game where you fight monsters and other players, and not 'play instruments', which I rather think is narrow-minded, because he should know that there are lots of other things to do, than fight.

Yea, maybe it was wrong to put everyone from XUO in a box, but I've seen similar post before, from XUO-players, and that is why I associate it with 'XUO'.

It was a typical post, which I associate(d) with XUO.

Ehm, I've only made the lute, so far. I think it took about 2 hours or so, to make it, but it was the first time I used the program also, so I had to find things out etc.

I think theres a few more important things to do before this... such as a turtle pond?

Keep IN:R history alive and bring back the Turtle Pond

no i do not think uo is all about fighting but those are the 2 major factors that come to mind when i think uo; pvp and pvm. to me we should consider implementing features that a majority of people will want to use, not a small percentage. at the moment i think the time potentially spent on this could be better spent else where.

(part of my post came from the fact i hate guitar hero so much and can't believe how obsessed people are with it. "so-and-so can play that song on expert and not make any mistakes ". to me, playing the real instrument is so much cooler, and i find that clicking buttons and not even holding an imitation instrument is even lower. no offending intended.)

Ok, but try to remember that there are even shards where there are no PVP at all, called RP-shards. This is an RP/PvP, and there will be players who choses not to be a part of the PvP. And at least I don't consider fighting monsters, as a big part of UO, and I doubt many people does.

Why do you think people want this, just because they can't play a real instruments?! Dude, this is UO, it is supposed to be the game where you can do everything, you were able to do in the medievals. This should include, playing instruments, composing songs and perform with a band.

I play guitar IRL, and it's not like I want this in game, because I find it easier to click buttons than play the guitar IRL. This idea won't be like guitar hero at all. In guitar hero there's five buttons, and it has about nothing to do with what tone it is going to play. With this idea, it will be 18-54 single tones, and every tone will have its own button, as a matter of fact, you will acctually have to know something about music and instrumets 'IRL', to make it sound good, or at least it would make it alot easier.

He has a good point...

"All right, they're on our left, they're on our right, they're in front of us, they're behind us... They can't get away this time"
