Rob Wrote:On the other hand a server in AUS would no doubt be laggy for some players on other continents. You have to think about the whole player base. It doesn't make much sense to host a server on a different continent than most of the players, and I definitely understand the owner/admin wanting to have full control of the server.
Cujo used to tear it up back in the day and he was on AOL dialup from France.
No one mentioned hosting the server in Australia. The suggestion was to move it to the US, this would drop Aus\NZ players down to about ~200ms and European players might jump to ~100ms both of which make the game playable.
Speed isnt an issue with UO, it doesnt really require large amounts of bandwidth, on IN1 i was able to tear it up on DialUp from Western Australia.
Latency is our issue atm.
Khal Drogo Wrote:Rob, I agree. I know that the owners must consider the majority of the playerbase before considering a hand full in Australia. However I just feel that if the server was back in America that everyone would benefit. It may be slightly slower for Europe based players however still playable which I believe would equal more players on the server.
Personally, I pay $120AUD ($110 USD) each game I purchase from the shop. I'm happy to support/contribute to donations with IN - upto $70-$80AUD per month - so my guild could play on the shard with such a strong playerbase available at the moment.
Taran or whoever is running IN at the moment - Would this option even be considered if you were able to recieve enough donations to support a server in the US? If so, could someone give a rough estimation on the costs involved in getting a server set up for IN in America? I'm extremely serious about this and would be willing to put in any leg work I could to assist in it happening. Or maybe even a strong/faster server somewhere closer to Australia but not to far from America and Europe. (Open to suggestions on this).
I have a feeling I'm wasting my time with all this and I completely understand any decisions made (positive or negative for the Australian players) but I had to ask.. You can appreciate that right?

A decent server in the US is probably going to be around US$100-US$150 a month.
The below is a screenshot of my ping to a US based UO shard which currently supports 150-200 users concurently. (I removed its name and a few digits from its IP as not to advertise)
Then under it you'll see my ping to IN. I can run around on the first one with 0 lag and it has users from all over the globe.
Id certainly entertain the idea of donation if I could actually play.
