You'd be surprised if you really think back to XUO. Almost every event was autosupply. At first reps weren't autosupply, but because some people went forever before they died (smoke, scarecrow, silverwolf, dramatic, etc) it wasn't fair to these people because they would use all their supplies to win a ticket and then everyone else got a ticket too for doing nothing. These guys were using more then 10k worth in supplies for a ticket worth 10k. After this everything except regs were auto. And the weekly reg was auto too.
In the end though, I do agree with the concept that too much auto supply does lower the economy. Look at scrolls in the vendor mall; 100 lightning sell for 1k-2k. On XUO 100 lightning scrolls sold for 10k and almost everybody had GM inscription anyways.
I think the staff just want people to participate since there are so many other things keeping the economy in check. And in the last month or so since I've been playing again, it has been a fairly low player base so that's another reason they are probably doing auto supply.
