I don't think it's so bad to do it with the water pitchers. Those you can fill from a trough and since each one can water 5-6 times just use 5-6 pitchers and fill those every 30 plants or so.

I do agree with Jiraiya though, you shouldn't have to unlock a plant as a house co-owner to water it (bug?).
