This is why one of my starting skills was Carpentry. I wanted to be past the club-making stage.
You have to make clubs to 65, which takes 3 logs each, then it's blank scrolls which is 1 log 1 spider's silk. Much easier.
I dunno how many it takes to GM though since I haven't GM'd it and have stopped playing my player toon.
