I open the map, find the spot that I know it should be, then proceed to wander around the spot for 10 minutes until I find the magic spot that I need to be in.

I think that if you're within a 30x30 square or so, you should turn to face the location of the treasure if you try to dig and fail. Maybe then I wouldn't rage every time I try to dig one up.
