Yeah it probably lowers the damage quite a bit but it should still cause enough damage to you so that you'd have an advantage if you wore an armor as well. Plus that can probably be re-scripted by Taran or Shade so that they still cause enough damage to make it worth wearing an armor even if you use your chaos/order/neutral shield, if it doesn't already (haven't tested them with such a shield on myself yet).
