This used to happen back on IN1 for like the first month but then was canned, resource gathering skills wont get a reward. Not to say its a bad idea, i think your right about it being hard... and iw ould love a special pick axe... but as it is i recon we have enough rewards
EDIT: oki i thought id better explain a bit better.
Mining, Lumberjacking and fishing arent expensive and all that intensive skills to train. Initial startup costs to train any of these skills is at bax 50gp.. a pick axe/axe/fishing rod. So technically your getting a special item for time. Where as with skills like smithy, carp and taming etc, Smithy requires ALOT of iron and is rather expensive, carp again like smithy but with logs... and taming... well its just BS hard
Really its the amount you spend to GM that skill is the value of that special item you get.

Smithy/Carp/Alchemy etx - Cost Alot
