Its not the fact that you will kill it no matter what, it is the fact of time. You should not be able to kill a dragon so fast that you only need a single ev.
I killed a few drakes yesterday by ev'ing them and thought it was a perfect balance. This way the shard is not flooded with gold in a matter of one month.
