Staff Members.
#1

This isn't a flame post towards anyone, this is simply what I've seen from the day I've logged on and I believe that there might need some adjustment/readjustment. I'm not telling anyone how to do their job, dont take this negatively in any way, it's my point of view and feel free to tell me yours...

I made this post because I believe that there are certain staff members who are working harder than the other staff members, maybe even doing their end of the deal...

There has been times where we are like 215 players online and I would go to page and theres like 8-10 queued pages and no staff members online. Well I understand, because i've previously been a GM on several shards, and know that it isnt easy for people to work for free and be on all the time. But from my experience, what I do believe is that the staff members who are working for a big shard like this should be active enough or not take the job at all...

It's a big responsibility and it isn't for everyone, It's for people who have extra time on their hands and who know what their doing and are knowledgable with the game and are willing to help.

So far the only people who have answered my pages, pages ive seen answered, in game are as follows (not counting admins)

- Viz
- Vulcan
- Pande
- Odium

Those are the only four i've seen answer my pages from the list on the main site. As I said, this isn't a flame post or anything, it's something that I see as a player that should be resolved for the better of the shard. The other GM's that I havent seen answer my pages broadcast, which I think are useless things, such as.

"congrats we hit 240 players"
"duel arena open come and see it!!"
"look their's PK'ers on brit bridge you might want to come check it out!"

I mean personally, I think that it's a little annoying when we get broadcasts about Gm's telling us how many people are on all the time, once in a while is ok, but I mean every time? We're all adults and know how to push .on ... I know its for motivation and to remind us of our achievements as a community, but I still believe there are more constructive things to do.

My suggestion is:

What we should do is see which staff members are on from what time zone and set them on to come during specific times irl so theres always someone on at different times of the day. For those who are too busy, I believe the mature/adult thing to do would let someone else take your spot for the better of the shard. I mean everyone on that staff team is an awesome GM/admin/seer's. I've seen them all play/staff and they know what their doing, but there comes a time when you give your position up or just be active more often...

A scheduel would be a good idea though, we had it on XUO, where GM's would write a specific time when they can be on during days and they come on for their "shifts". This works by having a minimum of lets say 5-6 hours a week? (you guys can set your own minimums that was just an example) and that way you're insured that theres always someone on.

This was just my opinion and how I see things being ran on INX. Feel free to post what you think and criticize/input on the situation.

Thanks.

The timezones of the staff are all stated on the forum, as well as what there roles are... so its obvious that you wont see alot of the ones not in/near your time zone as well as the Seers as its not their main role to answer pages.

On the note about setting times for staff to be on... you cant do that.. its not a paid job they are offering their time to help so thats what they do they use their SPARE time to help out. Now if they were to be paid (which they arent going to be) then you could demand them to work at a certain time etc. Not to mention also unplanned circumstances may arrise wether it be family, school or other commitments which need to be put ahead of UO.

If you could be a bit more specific and tell us what times you are experiencing a "lack of staff" then maybe something can be done with it, wether it be higher another GM or just making sure someone is available.

See I have had Taran, Maka and Azrael come to me several times as well as the staff you mentioned. Yeah I page alot and love to make them work.
The fact is unless you are at the comp 24/7 you won't see all the staff. Some are only going to be around for weekends or maybe early mornings, and their morning may be when you sleep. I don't think anyone needs to relinquish their position and if they do I am sure one of our admins will address the issue.
I must say though that your post was well put. Maybe an additional staff member or two could help but I see no reason why anyone should have to leave. They are all doing their part from what I have seen.
Hopefully the staff could create a list of active time they are on (or usually on) and decide what time slots need to be filled. Though I have yet to page with their being no staff on.

Damn you Elcid for posting right before me!

I had a problem with mozilla blobking my forum access login so I paged about it. I had a GM and a Dev appear...and I really felt like I was wasting their time. Maybe treat this server as a gift while it lasts rather than your own personal chance to get laid? To get any kind of response in a game like this is a matter of grin and bear. Imagine when this shard (and I hope it does) gets like 1k+ average online... then you wont have your own personal GM ! Maybe hire someone to catch your rattle as it sails over the side of your pram.

In short...grow some. Leave the people alone. You should feel priveledged to be here, not begrudged to add 1 to the population count.

i can understand where silverwolf's coming from up to a certain point.

i've played on shards where there wouldnt be a staff for hours to answer my page and its frustrating and may even damage the shards reputation if it happens again and again to the same player. even worse if its to a completely new player.

i dont see us enforcing staff to be on at certain times because as Elcid said; there are circumstances which over-rule uo. we all volunteered to be staff and we knew, or should of known, that a certain commmitment level would be required from us and we should of only taken the role if we knew we could hold up our end of the bargain. and if a staff member can't then something needs to be done.

im not about to make an excuse for every staff but all staff have different roles. for ex: maka is retired and is our lead scripter right now. nobody should even expect to see him make an announcement ingame. not even "restarting server for updates, be back online real soon".

we already hired 1 new staff in less then 1 week of the shard being live and im sure more will join our team when the right person(s) is found.

Swanny your post wasn't exactly the best thing to say, Silverwolf is trying to address what he finds to be an issue and you downplayed it. please let him express his concerns and we will address them.

Thanks,

Dude it's people like you, who get me all pissed and than I get mad and people get mad at me for being mad.

In short, Shut up... If you aren't going to say anything that is relavent, dont say it at all. Your entire post was useless garbage...

I'm not *****ing about shit i'm only looking at things from my prospective and telling you what I think about the shards system, and you can tell me what you think. not tell me to "grow some" and appreciate the shard. Man I appreciate this shard more than you do, you might not know it because of the way i act on the forums sometimes (depends who it is) but i'm sure ive brought more people to this shard than you have times 2. so please, go read a book.

bah im done replying to you, it's pointless... just get back on topic I dont want this to be another flame post.

I apologise Silverwolf, I think I am still bitter about being 2 days old and being gang raped by 5 pk'ers when I went out exploring (yes you were one of them) and being told to 'stay in n00bville l0l! But my point was to say, the GM's arent paid to do this service. They made this shard from their own pockets, and are here purely because of the love of UO. So the complaining that there arent fast GM responses is self destructive. It lowers the interest of the management and that is death to any shard. Just reminding you that this is free and welcoming to anyone indescriminitely. And there are auto responses to most game-play preventing situations (auto-unstick etc). Personally I think its great here...and I want to make a vote for it and recommend it to my guildies who still P2P on Drachenfels. But so far these forums arent helping tbh.

(And just a quick FYI , theres 6-10 people waiting on another server for my recommendation to join, and so far I've met 3 amazingly cool people and 6-10 asshats. But I want this to work as it's the most imaginative and player/challenge friendly shard I've been on.)

Agreed. There is no need to start flaming when posts are well said and addressing issues. Just because you don't see why he addressed this does not mean he did it for no reason. If there is a point in time where there are no staff on for hours then I agree that maybe this needs to be looked at soon. Mainly because the shard is growing daily.

yes I agree its a situation that needs to be adressed. But the tone of the post was very de-constructive. Almost complaining. I just dont think biting the hand that feeds is a particularly good course of action at this time, or in fact, any time, and I apologise for any offence caused.

I'm going to look into this and see if we actually need to hire a new staff member. We have plenty of European staff though so maybe you just got unlucky that there were no staff online? Which time did you page?
If you paged in the middle of the day you have to realize that most staff members have works to go to, and the rest studies to take care of. No matter how many staff we have, sometimes it's bound to happen that no staff members are online.

But yeah, since we have 200+ players online we might need one or two new counselors. I'll go through the logs and check the average time of page respondings etc to confirm this.

Silverwolf, i've answered two pages that you happened to be in .. or directly involved in.

I do agree that sometimes I log on and find no other staff member online but myself, mostly cause of my ****ed up timezone. Smile
