What happens when you lose karma? I see the term karma grey, I guess this means your name is grey but how does this affect you?

When you go karma grey it means other players can attack you. Guards can't be called on you though unless you are karma red.

Ah yes, the other side effect of karma grey. Lots of players try to call guards.
