Ingame Update Gump - Eighty Swords - 05-25-2009

I think there are some players on our shard that don't check the forums or website very much so they don't always know about the latest updates and important changes like the .sam feature added yesterday.

To help these players I think it would be cool to have a message box show up the first time you log in after an update showing all the changes made, or at least the important ones.

The ingame message wouldn't have to show updates like 'cleaned up player.mobile.cs' or 'corrected spelling issues', just the updates that affect people ingame like 'added command to show when players enter an area', 'added 5 new types of logs', 'added a new event; color wars', etc.

There could even be buttons to go back and forth to see previous updates and a button you could click to take you to the homepage to see more info on the updates when an explanation is needed on it (like the status page or .sam update).

What do you think dev team?

Or Better... Start using Message Board, put one in Pits with the latest news (changelog or whatever) and another for trades (like 80 said, not everyone check forums , so they dont see the trade section).

And Also add them to craft menu I want one.

So like the good old Message of the Day gump? I was never really fond of that but I do notice that many people forget about the forums and the fact that they should check them at least on Sunday's. If nothing else I could add a npc that would tell you updates upon asking it or simply use town criers. Though a MotD might be a bit better.

And what about add a Message Board on pits ? Big Grin So You can anounce your auctions there and tell them to come here at forums.

It wouldn't have to be a message of the day in the sense you get one every day, just a one time gump when there are important updates added.

For example the updates were made yesterday, everyone who logs in 30 seconds after it would get the message showing the updates, then if they log off and back in 30 minutes later or today they wouldn't get it again since they already know about it. But if someone doesn't log in for 2 days after the update, they would get it then just the one time.

Message boards would be cool to add. If I remember right, the problem with them (at least on XUO) was that nobody could ever figure out how to get the messages to stay on it for a certain amount of time...

NPC could work too except you have to go to it and it's not as 'in your face' about it all. Say there's a drastic change like Vesper becomes a red town for a month as part of a RP story, well if I go to Vesper and get attacked by Madman and he doesn't get killed when I yell guards, it won't be the staff's fault because I had the gump warning me about the change and I had the choice to read it or just ignore it and close it.

If the staff is concerned that someone might not understand the updates because their English isn't that good, I'm sure Muto and Tiesto could do a translation and it wouldn't take much time since it's just once a week and I'd be willing to do it for any french people who don't have very good english (although I don't think there are many). Gang-bang or someone else could probably do it for the Russian players too.

More important updates I usually let the towncriers say. But then again I mostly tell the players to actually visit the website/forums and read about it there.

Ingame Update Gump - Eighty Swords - 05-25-2009

The only update I saw from a town crier was the stealing one and then I actually forgot about them saying them since I thought it was just a one time sort of thing.

True you do do a good job pointing people to the website Taran, I'm just thinking about those who don't log on around the time of the update when you're saying to check forums. Smile

What about a stone that when you dclick it open your browser to the Changelog

Ingame Update Gump - Eighty Swords - 05-26-2009

That works too, but again it's not very 'in your face' which is what I think is needed.

Look at my last example of Vesper becoming a red town. If we have a town crier that says the updates or a stone that takes you to the website someone could just say 'I didn't know about the stone, that's not fair' or 'I don't look at town criers that's not fair'.

That's why I suggested something like the old 'message of the day' as Shade called it so that people have no choice but to see it and then it's their responsibility to actually read it.
