Did you run out of money? You have to put in 500g per day I think.

They do charge 500g per real life day, so if he runs out of money, he'll disappear and drop his bag. (I'm not sure if he drops his bag where he stands or if it goes to your bank. Check both spots)
You can pay him by dropping gold on him or letting him take from what has been earned.
